Treating A Panic Attack In Children

Panic attack in children often looks different than in adults, because children tend to report the physical symptoms accompanying panic attacks rather than the psychological symptoms.

Anxiety and panic usually arises through something happening within the child’s life. Sometimes it may be a life experience, school and other times it may be such as a death in the family or parents separation.

A Panic attack in children can be easily treated by knowing and identifying the root cause. Here are some methods that can help treat panic attacks in children:

Psychological Treatments:

1. psychotherapy is recommended as the first treatment for children with panic disorder. Children with panic disorder may carry a sense of failure, as if the illness was their fault. Psychotherapy can help reduce the anxiety symptoms, and can help children to become aware of and address their feelings of failure.

2. Cognitive Behavior Therapy – This method helps teaching children new skills to reduce anxiety that can lead to panic attacks. In CBT, the child is helped to become aware of negative thoughts, feelings or reactions. The clinician guides the child to think of new, more positive alternatives thoughts, and teaches them techniques for anticipating and preventing the emergence of panic attacks.

Treatment at Home

  1. Listen to your child’s feelings. This is one of the most powerful treatments for your child’s anxiety. Simply be there for him, and listen. Don’t judge him. Or try to tell him how to act. Just listen, and let him feel that you are there for him.
  2. Teach your child simple relaxation techniques. Teach him how to do deep breathing, how to count to 10 when he encounters an attack. These are simple but powerful methods.
  3. Praise your child every time he makes an effort to deal with his anxiety. Every little effort that he makes is worth your praising. That would help him tremendously to eliminate panic attacks.

These are just some tips and techniques that help stop a panic attack in children. There are self-help methods that help treat panic attacks both in adults and children, and if you don’t want to take your child to therapy, you should consider them.

We can refer Social phobia the same as we refer to agoraphobia and simple phobia, in terms if causes and treatment. In this post, I will discuss only methods that do not require any drugs for social phobia treatment.
Self-help groups
Due to the characteristics of social phobia, self-help groups may be difficult to set up, but they can be a great opportunity to exchange information with other people sharing the same symptoms. These groups are lead by psychologists and psychotherapists that did a prior private talk with each of the participants.
Hypnotherapy
In this treatment the hypnotherapist recognizes the parts in the subconscious of the patient, which are part of his phobia, and reprograms them in a way that will minimize the phobia symptoms. The problem with this treatment is that some people don’t like the fact they give someone else control over them.
NLP –Neuro Linguistic Programming
NLP practices that way we create our reality. Social phobia, from NLP viewpoint, is the result of constructs that we created ourselves and don’t work well. With the help of NLP these actions are revealed and fixed, so that social phobia is minimized or even eliminated.
Psychological treatment
First I have to say that psychological treatment alone cannot guarantee results. Sometimes the disorder becomes rooted in a person’s life in such a degree, that it makes him think that it is part of his personality, and not an outside learned behavior, which is what it actually is. When talking about psychological treatment, the most efficient treatment is behavioral-cognitive therapy.
This method consists on training a person to detect the thoughts which do not contribute to his quality of life. The behavioral side consists on exposing him In a controlled way to the situations that cause anxiety. Gradually, the anxiety caused by these situations, will decrease to a level that the person can control.
Energy Psychology
The last treatment that we’ll discuss here is actually a few thousand years old.  It has the same foundations as acupuncture, but without using any needles. The treatment is more emotional, and has a lot of benefits over other treatments. This treatment can be done by you without a therapist. This not only saves you time and money, but also gives you total control over your life, and usually it is permanent.
